First Impressions

We arrived following a stunning drive over Snowdonia, which was a full on adventure in itself with some amazing scenery. The approach to the campsite is over a road which floods during the really high tides (springs) so it is worth checking before you arrive that you will be able to get there (there is a handy link to the tide times on their website https://llechcamping.co.uk/tide-times/ )! The campsite is accessed through a gate on a hill which is kept closed so you will have to jump out to let yourself in.

Arrival

On arrival at the Llech Camping and Touring Site, there was a helpful board which detailed all the arrivals for the day and a map to which pitch you have been allocated so you are able to drive straight in and find your pitch. Friendly staff are on site in the staff and provided a warm welcome as we checked in and paid our outstanding fees for the stay.

First impressions of the campsite was that it was a true gem. A beautifully relaxed vibe greeted us along with a large grass pitch complete with electric hook up. There are several water points throughout the campsite so no long walk required to fill up your water reserves. The kids were able to play safely next to the pitch whilst we set up as there is so much space and hardly any traffic on the site. There were several other families staying on the site which is always a plus when travelling as a family as there are always new friendship opportunities!

Riverside Location

One of the campsites main attractions is its beautiful riverside location. It has direct access to the water from the campsite and views all the way over to Port Merion on the other side of the river. My heart filled with the amazing views over the Welsh countryside whilst dipping my toes in the beautifully clear waters.

Family-Friendly Features

Although there aren’t any specific child-friendly facilities on the campsite itself, the girls weren’t bored for a second! With plenty of room to run and play along with the river to splash around in (we bought a body board from the nearby town and they had hours of fun with it on the river!), they had loads to keep them occupied.

Fun on the river

On-Site Shop

When they needed a refuel, we headed to the small onsite shop for a delicious tub of local ice-cream which we all thoroughly enjoyed! The shop also sells a small selection of food drink and other goodies, just in case you run out of supplies!

Fire Pits

Every evening the girls loved roasting marshmallows on the fire pit and making smores of all different varieties! The campsite has fire pits available to hire should you need, and provide plenty of slabs next to the pitches to ensure your fire pit and BBQ are safely raised off the ground.

Marshmallow Time!

Toilet and Shower Facilities

The facilities at Llech Camping and Touring site are also well set out for families. There are two wet rooms with a toilet, shower and sink in each with plenty of room for the whole family to get clean together if needed. I have found it an issue at other campsites where all washing facilities are designed for individuals which makes life difficult if you have a child or two to get showered as well as yourself! There are also very good washing up facilities with hot water which makes life easy to get washed up after a family feast!

One of my absolute favourite facilities was the outdoor ‘shower with a view’. To the side of the main toilet block there is an outdoor shower which allows you to wash off your days adventuring whilst admiring the amazing scenery! I also showered the girls in this facility and they thought it was very novel! (We did shower in our swimsuits, however it is very secluded and does have a curtain should you be brave enough to bare it all!)

Pitches and Facilities

There are only 15 pitches on at the Llech Camping and Touring Park. 8 of the 15 pitches have electric hook ups and all pitches are on grass. There is an Elsan point for chemical disposal and plenty of water points.

All of the pitches are well spaced out so everyone has plenty of space; some pitches also have their own picnic bench.

Being a small site, it doesn’t skip on facilities, with plenty of toilets and washing up sinks so you’re never waiting too long to wash the dishes or relieve the small ones!

Things to Do Nearby

One of the main attractions in the area is the beautiful town of Portmerion. Although this was on my list to visit, we didn’t visit on this trip. A bit of Google research suggested that it wasn’t the most child-friendly day out, so I appreciated the view of the town from the campsite and left it at that!

View from Harlech Castle

We took a trip out to Harlech Castle, which was well worth a visit and the climb to the top to see the incredible views over the town. The girls had a great time exploring the ruins. We also had a lovely time exploring the town on top of the hill.

Pro-tip: DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAMPERVAN UP THE HILL TO THE CARPARK BY THE CASTLE! Park in the car park at the bottom of the hill and walk up instead. The hill is very VERY steep and very VERY windy! The VW Van did make it to the top but it was probably the scariest bit of driving I have ever attempted!

Porthmadog Harbour

We also took a trip to the nearby town of Porthmadog, a harbour town. The Lee family had a lovely day exploring the marina and the town in the sunshine. We stopped to have lunch in a pub in the town and was surprised to find a steam railway in the garden! The Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog and is on our list for a return visit. Although we didn’t ride the train, it was lovely enjoying lunch and watching the steam trains come and go!
